Omar A. Grant
Omar A. Grant, 46, of North Charleston, was held at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in Charleston County. The sheriff's office said he became unresponsive in the facility's processing unit on February 10, 2026, and he died at the Medical University of South Carolina on February 14. The Charleston County Coroner's Office has not released a cause or manner of death, and its investigation is continuing. The sheriff's office has asked the State Law Enforcement Division to review the incident and is conducting its own internal review. His family's attorney, Allie Menegakis, says the family wants an independent investigation into the medical cause of death and the timeline of events in the jail, and that they are left with far more questions than answers.
Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined (disputed; neglect alleged). The coroner has not released a cause or manner of death, and his family's attorney Allie Menegakis wants an independent investigation into the medical cause and the jail timeline, and says the family is seeking to learn whether he received proper care.
Reported by: Charleston County Coroner's Office (medical examiner or coroner); Charleston County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); Allie Menegakis, attorney for his estate (family or their lawyers).
