Oliver Weaver
Oliver Weaver was one of three brothers held at Sheriff Couch's residence in Anthony, Kansas, in April 1886. The Wichita Daily Eagle reported that a mob from Danville broke in shortly after midnight, took the prisoners from the sheriff's custody, roped them in a partly built school house and nearly hanged them before citizens' bells drove the mob off, and that the mob then shot the brothers. The Emporia Weekly News instead reported that the guards had moved the prisoners out the back door before the mob reached them, and the two papers also differ on whether the killing happened on April 18 or 19. His mother was present and, according to the Eagle, begged the mob to spare her sons, and a coroner's inquest was pending.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The Emporia Weekly News reports a mob of about forty armed men broke into the Anthony, Kansas sheriff's residence and shot the brothers after the guards had moved the prisoners out the back door, while a Wichita Daily Eagle correspondent says the mob took them from the sheriff's custody, half-hanged them at a partly built school house, and shot them after citizens' bells scared it off; the coroner's inquest was pending and the accounts disagree on the details.
Reported by: The Emporia Weekly News (reporters); Anthony correspondent to the Wichita Daily Eagle (reporters); Coroner's inquest (medical examiner or coroner).
