O'Grady
Frank O'Grady was held in the jail at Emporia, Virginia, in March 1900. A mob took him from the jail along with Walter Cotten and lynched him, and the reports give the date as March 17 or March 24. The Richmond Planet reported that the sheriff and a judge had agreed with mob leaders to let the mob take the prisoners after state troops were sent away. The Shenandoah Herald said the sheriff and judge had asked for the troops to be withdrawn, and the Semi-Weekly Messenger said they were too frightened to stop the mob. Sheriff Smith identified his body.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took O'Grady from the Emporia jail in Virginia and lynched him, according to the Richmond dispatch and Judge W. Samuel Goodwyn as quoted in the Richmond Planet.
Reported by: Richmond dispatch reprinted in the Shenandoah Herald (reporters); Judge W. Samuel Goodwyn, as quoted by the Richmond Planet (court); special dispatch from Richmond, Va., as printed in The Chipley Banner (reporters); Sheriff Smith, who identified the body (the agency that held him).
