Nimrod Cross
Nimrod Cross, a Black man, was held in a house under guard near Sardis, according to the Western Kansas World, which reported on July 11, 1896. On July 7, 1896, a mob overpowered the two guards, took him from the house and hanged him from a tree. The people who held him were the guards at that house, and the account describes the mob as overpowering them rather than being handed him. The same report does not say whether the guards resisted.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob overpowered the two guards holding him, took him from custody and hanged him from a tree.
