Nicolette Green
Nicolette Green, 43, of Myrtle Beach, was a mother whose family said she had struggled with mental illness for about 30 years and had lost a young child in 2015; her daughter drove her to appointments, and her family said she was not violent. On September 18, 2018, while being transported by Horry County sheriff's deputies for a mental health evaluation, the van she was in was driven into floodwater from Hurricane Florence near Nichols, and she could not get out of the rear cage and drowned. Two former deputies were charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide, and one was convicted and sentenced to 18 years in prison. Her mother said the deaths were caused by the deputies' conduct, the defense called it an accident, and the sheriff's office said the van may have driven around barriers on the road.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). Former deputies were charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide, and the Sheriff's Office called it an accident that may have involved driving around barriers, while the family's lawyer says deputies drove into floodwater and the family disputes the official account.
Reported by: Horry County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held her); South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (outside investigators); Family and their lawyer (family or their lawyers).
