Nelling
Nelling was held in an Indiana jail in December 1883 when, according to an editorial reprinted in The Jackson Standard from the New York Independent, an armed mob of about 150 men surrounded the building, broke into his cell and hanged him from a tree. The editorial calls the killing murder and urges Indiana authorities to identify and prosecute the men who took part. The editorial does not say whether jail staff resisted the mob or gave up the keys.
