Died in jail or a lockup
Nease
Nease, a Black man, was held in the Rowan County jail at Salisbury, North Carolina, in August 1906. On August 6, a mob of about 3,000 men forced its way into the jail shortly before 11 p.m., took three of the six Black men held there, Nease among them, and lynched them, according to the New-York Tribune. The paper reports that the mayor, a United States senator and a judge addressed the crowd from the jail steps before the men were taken. Another account gives the number taken as five rather than three.
