Nathaniel Witherspoon
Nathaniel Witherspoon, 71, of Charleston, died on November 5, 2025, at the L.C. Knight Detention Center in Dorchester County. The sheriff's office said detention deputies found him unresponsive in his cell around 8 a.m. during a uniform change, and he was pronounced dead at 10:15 a.m. An autopsy was scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina, and the Sheriff's Office asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to conduct an independent investigation alongside the Dorchester County Coroner's Office. The cause and manner of his death are pending.
