Nathan Peru
Nathan Peru, 31, was held in Pima County custody and taken to Banner University Medical Center South in Tucson for medical care in October 2025. Authorities say he slipped a wrist restraint while a single corrections officer was alone with him, reached for her gun, and was shot by her during the struggle. Other accounts say he was moved to another hospital room before he died a short time later, and bodycam footage from the second officer has been released while the shooting officer's footage has not. The Oro Valley Police Department is leading the criminal investigation, and the sheriff's office is conducting a separate administrative review.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff. Authorities say a corrections officer shot Nathan Peru during a struggle over her gun while he was receiving hospital care under guard, and the Oro Valley police and the sheriff's office are reviewing the shooting.
Reported by: Pima County Sheriff's Department (the agency that held him); Oro Valley Police Department (outside investigators).
