Nathan Lacey
Nathan Lacey, a Black man, was held in the jail at Forrest City, Arkansas, in October 1911, after a posse captured him earlier that day. A mob of several hundred people broke into the jail with sledgehammers and crowbars, took him from his cell, and hanged him from a telegraph pole about a mile away at an old brickyard site. One newspaper reports that a judge and other officials urged the crowd to leave the matter to the courts, and that the crowd overpowered the jailer. Accounts differ on the exact location, and it is not clear from the reports whether jail staff resisted or gave up access to him.
