Nathan Kinney

27 years old · died March 2025 · Cuyahoga County Corrections Center, Cuyahoga County, Ohio

Nathan Kinney, 27, was an energetic man who ran and played basketball, and he was the father of two children, according to his family. In March 2025 he collapsed in the gym of the Cuyahoga County Jail, where he was held, and was taken to a hospital, where he died. The sheriff's department said he was engaging in recreational activities when he collapsed. His family says he had no prior health problems, and his cousin, LaDawna Hill, said he had been at the jail for three months, was never seen by anyone, and had a heart attack after not receiving appropriate medical care. The county medical examiner's office has attributed his death to heart problems rather than drugs, and the family is demanding his medical records and jail video.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The medical examiner ruled his death was from heart problems, not drugs, while his cousin says he had a heart attack after not receiving appropriate medical care and was never seen by anyone during three months at the jail, and his family says he had no prior health problems and is demanding medical records and jail video.

Reported by: Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office (medical examiner or coroner); his cousin.
