Nathan Carman

29 years old · died June 15, 2023 · Cheshire County Jail, Cheshire County, New Hampshire

Nathan Carman, 29, was described by his lawyers as upbeat, confident and looking forward to his day in court, and his aunts said they were deeply saddened by his death. He was found unresponsive in his single cell at the Cheshire County Jail in Keene, New Hampshire, in the early hours of June 15, 2023, while he was held there awaiting trial. Officials said the death was not considered suspicious and that the cause was under investigation by Keene police and the medical examiner, while people familiar with the investigation said he was believed to have died by suicide. His lawyers said the medical examiner indicated he had hanged himself, but that there was no suicide note, and they said they are struggling to accept that finding.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed). Officials said he was believed to have died by suicide, and the medical examiner's autopsy found he hanged himself with his shoelaces, but his lawyers dispute the finding, saying he left no suicide note and seemed upbeat the night before.

Reported by: Cheshire County Department of Corrections, including Superintendent Doug Iosue (the agency that held him); New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (medical examiner or coroner); Martin Minnella and his other lawyers (family or their lawyers).
