Nat Pierce
Nat Pierce was held in a jail when, on Wednesday night, September 26, 1877, about twenty masked men took him from it and hanged him, according to a brief report in the Worcester Daily Spy published September 28, 1877. The report links him to killings in Pickens County, Alabama, a charge that is an accusation in the paper and not a finding. It does not say whether jail officers resisted the mob, gave up keys, or handed him over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A brief 1877 dispatch reports that about twenty masked men took Nat Pierce from a jail and hanged him, without naming the jail or saying whether officers resisted.
