Morgan Angerbauer
Morgan Angerbauer was a lively 20-year-old, full of spunk, and her mother remembers that she changed her hair color with her moods. Morgan was diabetic and died on July 1, 2016, while held at the Bowie County jail in Texarkana, Texas, which LaSalle Corrections ran. Her family says she was not given insulin and that staff ignored her repeated requests and screams for help for hours. An autopsy found she died of diabetic ketoacidosis, and LaSalle's own internal review found that log checks recorded as done over a nine-hour period had not taken place. The family's lawsuit against LaSalle Corrections was settled in 2020.
Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). The autopsy found diabetic ketoacidosis, while her family and lawsuit say jail staff ignored her repeated requests for insulin and blood-sugar checks for hours, and LaSalle's internal review found the required log checks were recorded but never done.
Reported by: autopsy; Texarkana police investigation (outside investigators); LaSalle Corrections internal review (the agency that held her); family and attorneys; police and nursing board records.
Lawsuit: Her family sued LaSalle Corrections, the jail's private operator, and settled the case in 2020.
