Montel Williams

died October 31, 2023 · Northeast Ohio Correctional Center, Mahoning County, Ohio

Montel Williams died on October 31, 2023, while held at Northeast Ohio Correctional Center, a private prison in Youngstown run by CoreCivic, and his mother's lawsuit says the death was an overdose. His mother, Bonnie Billings, sued CoreCivic and its former warden, Douglas Fender, saying the company did not maintain staffing to prevent drug use and did not control contraband. She is seeking compensation for his pain and suffering and for the family's loss of his companionship. In August 2026 a federal judge dismissed the failure-to-protect claim, finding the lawsuit did not plausibly allege that he had unfettered access to drugs. The wrongful-death claim was sent back to Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, where it will be decided under Ohio law, and the judge did not rule on whether the defendants were liable.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed; neglect alleged). The complaint filed by his mother, Bonnie Billings, says CoreCivic did not maintain staffing to prevent drug use or control contraband at the prison, and that he died of ingesting fentanyl or another dangerous drug; a federal judge dismissed the failure-to-protect claim and sent the wrongful death claim to state court without deciding liability.

Reported by: Bonnie Billings, his mother, in a wrongful death lawsuit (family or their lawyers); federal judge.

Lawsuit: His mother, Bonnie Billings, sued CoreCivic and its warden over his death; a federal judge dismissed the federal failure-to-protect claim and sent the wrongful-death claim back to Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, and no settlement or award is reported.
