Mitchell
Mitchell, a farmer and gunsmith in his sixties, was in the custody of the Howard and Dawson county sheriffs after a shooting in which a ranch foreman named Stevens died. According to a telegraphed Omaha account printed in the New York Herald, about twenty-five to thirty ranchmen stopped the sheriffs while they were taking him toward Plum Creek, took him and killed him by burning. The Herald's correspondent wrote that Mitchell was probably innocent. Mitchell's small children had been in the yard when the shooting began at his house.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. An Omaha correspondent's telegraphed account, based on testimony, says a mob of ranchmen took Mitchell from the sheriffs' custody and burned him to death with slow tortures.
Reported by: Omaha correspondent's telegraphed account to the Herald, based on testimony (reporters).
