Mitch Mozeley
Mitch Mozeley worked for a livery stable owner in town, according to a researcher's account of the Macon County records. He was held at the Franklin jail in Macon County, North Carolina, when, in November 1898, two days before the state election, a mob of an estimated 150 to 300 people stormed the jail and took him to an iron bridge on the east side of town, where he was killed. John deVille, a history teacher and memorial organizer, told Blue Ridge Public Radio that the mob hanged him from the bridge over the Little Tennessee River. In 2021 a local group marched to the jail and the bridge to remember him on the anniversary of his death.
