Mingo Jack
Mingo Jack was held in the lock-up at Eatontown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, in 1886. A crowd broke into the lock-up, took him and lynched him. Testimony at the inquest suggested that the constable guarding him knew an attempt would be made and did not act to stop it, and that constable was later arrested on a manslaughter charge. A Philadelphia Press report said a theory was gaining credence that the wrong man was killed.
