Miguel Hernandez
Miguel Hernandez died at the Alachua County jail in October 2013, ten days after he attempted to hang himself in his cell. According to a Sheriff's Office report, he had been placed on 15-minute checks in a special needs housing pod because staff were concerned about marks on his arms. An officer who spoke with him said he had recently got a job and become engaged, and that he was upset and did not understand why he had been moved to the pod. The Sheriff's Office report says video showed him writing a letter shortly before the attempt, and the report states the manner of death as suicide.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). The Sheriff's Office report says Hernandez hanged himself in his cell, and a review of video showed him writing a letter shortly before the attempt; the report does not say whether the required 15-minute checks were done, and the summary's account of his placement on 15-minute checks is unverified.
Reported by: Sheriff's Office report (the agency that held him). The only account of how this person died comes from the agency that held him.
