Michael Worthington
Michael Worthington, 43, was executed by lethal injection at the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre, Missouri, on August 6, 2014, and was pronounced dead at 12:11 a.m. Before the procedure he spoke through the glass with relatives who were witnesses, asked for a Bible to be placed on his chest, and told a reporter he accepted what would happen. His attorneys asked the U.S. Supreme Court to delay the execution, citing lethal injections in Arizona, Ohio and Oklahoma that went wrong, and they challenged the secrecy around Missouri's execution drugs. The Supreme Court and Governor Jay Nixon declined to block it, and the lawyers said the state would eventually face a botched execution.
