Michael McCarthy
Michael McCarthy was held in the Sullivan County jail at Monticello, New York, when he died on February 3, 1884. According to a telegraph dispatch, several prisoners overpowered the sheriff and took the keys, and two of them got out and ran toward the woods. The sheriff's office said he fired his revolver after they ignored his order to come back, and McCarthy was struck and died about fifteen minutes later. Another account in the press describes the sheriff's son recapturing two of the men and says the sheriff fired at the two who fled, and it gives the dead man's name only as Mc Carthy.
