Michael Mayden

26 years old · died September 12, 2015 · Cimarron Correctional Facility, Payne County, Oklahoma

Michael Mayden, 26, was held at the Cimarron Correctional Facility in Cushing, Oklahoma, when a fight broke out on the Charlie North unit on Saturday, September 12, 2015. The Oklahoma Department of Corrections identified him as one of four men who died in the violence, which left others injured. Prosecutors described the stabbings as brief and largely off camera, and the state has not released its investigative report on the fight. A wrongful death lawsuit filed by his family says he was stabbed as he ran past and collapsed near the unit's exit door, and CoreCivic, which runs the prison, denies the allegations.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). Prosecutors say Michael was stabbed to death by other people held there during a gang fight, while his family's civil suit says a single officer radioed a warning and no other guards responded until after the fight ended.

Reported by: Oklahoma Department of Corrections, spokeswoman Terri Watkins (the agency that held him); Payne County District Attorney Laura Austin Thomas; medical examiner or coroner; a witness; his family's civil suit (family or their lawyers).

Lawsuit: His family sued CoreCivic, the operator of Cimarron Correctional Facility, in a wrongful death lawsuit, and CoreCivic denies the allegations; the amount of any settlement or award is not reported.
