Michael Griego
Michael Griego was held at the Harris County Jail in Texas, where he was injured on November 13, 2022, in an assault by another person held in his cell. Detention officers found him unconscious, and he died at a hospital on November 22, 2022. The Harris County Sheriff's Office first described the assault as apparent, and later court records and a custodial death report identify the cellmate as the attacker and classify the death as a homicide. His family said he had repeatedly told staff he was being assaulted and that nothing was done, and they object to him having been housed with the person accused in his death.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). The Sheriff's Office and a custodial death report say he died of head trauma from an assault by his cellmate, and the family says he repeatedly reported being assaulted and nothing was done.
Reported by: Harris County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); Harris County custodial death report filed with the Attorney General's Office (the agency that held him); Texas Rangers (outside investigators); Michael Griego's family (family or their lawyers); court records.
