Michael Gerard Smith
Michael Gerard Smith, 59, of New Mexico, died on December 14, 2020, at a local hospital after going into respiratory distress at the Federal Correctional Institution in Florence, Colorado, where he was held. He had tested positive for COVID-19 on November 17. The Florence Correctional Complex's executive assistant, in a press release, attributed his death to COVID-19 and noted his long-term medical conditions, which the CDC lists as risk factors for severe disease. The complex described his death as its first COVID-19 related death.
