Michael Galindo
Michael Galindo, 31, was held at Tecumseh State Prison in Nebraska when a riot broke out there in March 2017. Prosecutors say he was beaten and stabbed by a group of fellow prisoners, and an autopsy listed smoke inhalation from fires set in the unit as the official cause of death, despite more than 130 stab wounds. During the riot, he reportedly called his mother and tried to reassure his family that he was okay, and his family attended the trial. One man was convicted in the killing at a second trial, after the first ended in a mistrial; he has pleaded not guilty and his defense disputes the identification shown in surveillance video.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed). Prosecutors and the Nebraska Attorney General's office say fellow inmates beat and stabbed him during the 2017 riot, while an autopsy listed smoke inhalation as the official cause; the defense disputes the identification of the man charged, who maintains he was not involved.
Reported by: Nebraska Attorney General's office (outside investigators); Nebraska State Patrol investigator Neal Trantham (outside investigators); autopsy report; prosecutors; Nebraska Public Media (reporters); the man charged in the death, through his defense (family or their lawyers).
