Michael Eggers
Michael Wayne Eggers was executed by lethal injection at Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama, on March 15, 2018. The Alabama Department of Corrections said he was pronounced dead at 7:29 p.m., and two family members, a spiritual adviser and two friends witnessed the execution. The Equal Justice Initiative reports that he had a long history of mental illness, including paranoid delusions and suicide attempts that jail and prison staff had recognized, and it argues that his severe mental illness was not adequately assessed before he was executed. EJI also says a judge allowed him to dismiss his lawyers and abandon his appeals.
