Merrick Rosencrantz was put to death by legal execution at Leadville, Colorado, in August 1881, together with Frank Gilbert. The Narragansett Herald, which reported it on August 6, 1881, described it as the first legal execution held in that town. Rosencrantz was executed in the custody of the state.
