Mebane

Mebane, a Black man, was being carried by officers from Milton toward Yanceyville, North Carolina, on October 3, 1885. A Danville, Virginia dispatch published in the Indianapolis Journal the next day reports that about 200 men took him from the officers. The dispatch says that he was hanged and shot.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A Danville, Va. dispatch reports that about 200 men took Mebane from officers carrying him toward Yanceyville, N.C., and hanged and shot him.
