Died in jail or a lockup
McMurre
McMurre was taken from the jail at Richmond, Missouri, in March 1868 by a party of six people in disguise who called themselves a Vigilance Committee, and was hanged. The Evansville Journal dispatch places the hanging on the night before its report, while the Alexandria Gazette gives Tuesday night, March 17, so the exact date is uncertain. Neither account says whether jail staff resisted, gave up the keys or handed McMurre over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
