Matthew McCarthy
Matthew McCarthy, 39, was held at the Shawnee County jail in Topeka, Kansas, when jail staff found him in medical distress in his housing module on December 17, 2024. He was taken to Stormont-Vail Medical Center, where he was placed on life support, and his family later chose to remove him from it. The Shawnee County Department of Corrections said the death was an apparent suicide attempt. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and a county administrative review are examining his death.
