Matthew McCain
Matthew McCain, 29, was awaiting trial at the Durham County Detention Facility in North Carolina when he had a seizure in his cell in the early morning of January 19, 2016. Witnesses say people in his pod repeatedly pressed emergency call buttons and no officer answered, and he died around 5:30 a.m. His family and girlfriend, Ashley Canady, said he had complained for months that he was not getting consistent insulin or correctly timed anti-seizure medication. He had a newborn daughter, Kinslee, who was born a few weeks before his death, and he never met her. Canady says he worried aloud that he might not make it out of the jail.
