Mary Estey was a daughter of William Towne, and a Topsfield history reprinted in the Jersey City News in 1898 describes her as a woman of clear good sense, sweet spirit and deep piety. She was taken from her children and held in jail, and the history says her petitions to the court were eloquent. The reprint states that she was put to death in 1692 and calls her case a tragic injustice.
