Mary Elizabeth Moody-Lazabeck
Mary Elizabeth Moody-Lazabeck, 34, was held at the Marion County Jail in Florida from April 2018. Her mother, Marjorie Hykes, said she was the youngest of five children and the mother of three, and had suffered from mental illness since she was young. Mary died on July 25, 2018, after hanging herself in an infirmary cell with her own pants, and was taken to a hospital where she died. A prosecutor concluded she took her own life and found no criminal wrongdoing by jail staff, while her mother believes the jail should have monitored her more closely given her known suicidal history.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The prosecutor's review and FDLE investigation found she hanged herself with her pants in an infirmary cell, while her mother says the jail should have monitored her more closely given her known suicidal history.
Reported by: Florida Department of Law Enforcement (outside investigators); Assistant State Attorney Janine Nixon; Star-Banner (reporters); her mother.
