Martin Lee Anderson
Martin Lee Anderson was a 14-year-old boy who died on January 5, 2006, on his first day at the Bay County Sheriff's Office Boot Camp in Florida, a juvenile facility. He had complained of fatigue during a run in the yard, and video shows guards using force on him before an ambulance was called; he died at a hospital. The county medical examiner attributed his death to complications of sickle cell trait, while a second autopsy after exhumation found he suffocated from the guards' actions. Seven guards and a nurse were charged in connection with his death, and a jury later acquitted the eight former workers, a verdict his family strongly disputes.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed; neglect alleged). The Bay County medical examiner ruled the death a complication of sickle cell trait, while a second autopsy ordered by a special prosecutor found he suffocated from the guards' actions, and the family says the video shows guards restraining and kicking him as he was held down, and that staff ignored his complaints of fatigue and did not act on them quickly enough.
Reported by: Bay County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); Bay County medical examiner (medical examiner or coroner); special prosecutor's second autopsy (outside investigators); his family; news reports.
