Marshall Stoneback

died November 24, 1908 · Lake County Jail, Lake County, Tennessee

Marshall Stineback, also spelled Stoneback in some reports, was a Black man and one of three brothers held in the Tiptonville jail in Lake County, Tennessee. Accounts say a mob took the three men from the jail, placed them in a wagon, and hanged them from a scaffold built inside a Black church in District No. 4 in late November 1908. One report says a member of the mob fired a shot into his body, and the reports differ on whether the death occurred on November 24 or 25. The governor is said to have sent telegrams asking the sheriff to prevent the killing, and a lawyer is said to have asked the crowd to wait for a trial.
