Marshall Ray Price

46 years old · died December 8, 2022 · Greene County Detention Center, Greene County, Arkansas

Marshall Ray Price, 46, worked as a manager and bartender at a VFW post and had once been a standout student and athlete, and his daughter, Julian Jones, speaks of him as her father. He was held at the Greene County Detention Center in Paragould, Arkansas, and died at a hospital in early December 2022. His family says the coroner told them he had a skull fracture, broken ribs, a ruptured spleen and brain swelling. The autopsy listed hypovolemic shock from internal bleeding due to blunt force injuries to the torso, with the manner undetermined, and police and the prosecutor attributed the injuries to a consensual boxing match with another person held there, with no charges filed. Other people held at the jail say Price moaned and cried for help for hours before receiving treatment, and his family disputes the boxing account, asks whether timely medical care was withheld, and says EMS should have been called sooner.

Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined (disputed; neglect alleged). The autopsy listed the manner as undetermined, the prosecutor and state police attributed the injuries to a consensual boxing match with another inmate, and the family disputes that account, saying the autopsy doesn't match it and that staff delayed calling EMS and medical care while fellow inmates say he cried for help for hours.

Reported by: autopsy; Arkansas State Police (outside investigators); Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Sonia F. Hagood (outside investigators); family (Julian Jones) (family or their lawyers); fellow inmates.

Lawsuit: His family is pursuing a civil rights case over his death at the Greene County Jail in Arkansas, and no settlement or award amount has been reported.
