Died in jail or a lockup
Marshall Ratliff
Marshall Ratliff was held in the Eastland jail in Eastland, Texas, while awaiting a sanity hearing that had delayed his execution. On November 19, 1929, according to the Richmond Planet, a mob of about 150 to 200 men got into the jail, overpowered the jailer and took his keys, then removed Ratliff from his cell. The first rope broke, and the mob hanged him from a telephone pole cable in the town's business district. The jailer was overpowered and his keys taken.
