Marshall Miles
Marshall Miles, a 36-year-old Black father of two and husband, loved sports and dreamed of playing in the NBA, according to his family, and his mother said he struggled with depression. He died on October 28, 2018, at the Sacramento County Main Jail, hours after sheriff's deputies took him into custody near a Power Market. Video shown by his family's attorney, Jeremy Lessem, shows deputies pressing their knees into him while he said he could not breathe. Lessem says an autopsy described positional asphyxia as the cause and said the way deputies restrained him contributed to his death. His mother, LaTanya Andrews, says she asked officers to let her see him or take him to a hospital and was left standing there, and the sheriff's department and coroner have not publicly confirmed these accounts while a federal civil rights lawsuit is ongoing.
