Died in jail or a lockup
Marshall Boston
Marshall Hoston, a Black man, was held in the Frankfort jail in Kentucky in August 1894. Newspaper accounts say a mob took him from the jail, battered down the doors to his cell after the jailer refused to give up the keys, and hanged him from the iron bridge over the Kentucky River. The accounts say his body was then shot many times. The papers give different dates for the killing, August 14 and August 21, 1894. None of the accounts records a statement from the sheriff or jail staff about whether they resisted or handed him over.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody
