Mark Turner Jr.
Mark Turner Jr., 32, died at the Cuyahoga County Jail on November 1, 2022. The sheriff's office said he was found unresponsive in his cell that evening and taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, and that the cause of death was still under investigation. The Cuyahoga County medical examiner later found that he died of acute intoxication from medication prescribed to him at the jail. State inspectors said officers took more than the one-hour state minimum to check on him, and that the jail was not screening people for opiate withdrawal the day he died. His family sued the county and MetroHealth, saying doctors did not closely monitor him and corrections officers did not conduct required checks; the lawsuit was settled for $500,000, and neither the county nor MetroHealth commented.
