Mark Asay
Mark Asay, 53, was executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison in Raiford, in Bradford County, on August 24, 2017, and was pronounced dead at 6:22 p.m. The state used etomidate, a drug never before used in a US execution, after midazolam became hard to obtain. Critics said the drug was untested for executions, and one dissenting Florida Supreme Court justice argued that using it would violate the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment. The court denied a stay, and the U.S. Supreme Court also denied a stay without explanation, while Asay's attorneys argued the state courts had wrongly identified one victim's race.
