Marcus Donald was a man who, his mother Marilyn Donald says, was inquisitive and sweet, played high school football, loved his dog, and kept pets from iguanas to hamsters. He had converted to Judaism and kept kosher. He was held at the Shelby County Jail and was due to be released in late November. His family and attorneys say he was placed in a cell with another man who strangled him to death, and that cellmate has been charged. The family says his struggles with mental health were a central part of why he was held in jail for so long.
