died January 30, 1827 · Suffolk County, Massachusetts

Marchant, a man held in the Boston jail, was found dead in his cell by the prison keeper on the morning of January 30, 1827, after a fellow prisoner heard a groan the night before. According to a newspaper report citing the prison keeper, he had hanged himself from a grate using a strip torn from his blanket and a handkerchief. The report also says a few drops of blood had come from his mouth. Another account describes the death as a suicide and says a clergyman who had asked to visit him was refused a hearing.
