Marcellus Williams
Marcellus Williams, a devout Muslim who served as an imam for prisoners and wrote poetry, was executed by lethal injection at Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre, Missouri, on September 24, 2024, at age 55. His attorneys said he maintained his innocence to the end and pointed to new DNA testing and concerns about racial bias in jury selection. The St. Louis County prosecutor asked that the execution be stopped, and the victim's family had also asked that his life be spared. Governor Mike Parson, the Missouri Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to halt it. In his final statement he wrote, 'All praise be to Allah in every situation.'
Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. Missouri executed him by lethal injection; his attorneys objected that he maintained his innocence and pointed to DNA evidence, and the St. Louis County prosecutor and the victim's family urged clemency.
Reported by: Missouri Department of Corrections (the agency that held him). The only account of how this person died comes from the agency that held him.
