Manuel Head
Manuel Head owned a coffee shop in Key West, Florida, and was held in the Key West county jail in December 1921. Early one morning a mob came for him, shot him, and hanged him from a telephone pole near Fort Martello. Accounts differ on how the mob reached him: one says the jailer gave up the keys to his cell, another says the mob overpowered the jailer and took them, and a third says the sheriff opened the door to demands for a conference before armed men forced their way in. Marines who had been guarding the jail were relieved by deputies, and the crowd returned after that.
