Manson Isar

died December 29, 2017 · Hagåtña Detention Facility, Hagåtña, Guam

Manson Isar died in December 2017 while held at the Hagåtña Detention Facility on Guam. Court documents say other people held there beat him repeatedly in his cell, and the chief medical examiner, Dr. Aurelio Espinola, reported that he died from a crushed chest and a liver laceration. Seven Department of Corrections employees were served notices of final adverse action over the death; the Guam Federation of Teachers, representing the officers, says maintenance problems and delayed medical attention contributed to it rather than their own negligence. A grand jury has indicted nine men in connection with his death, and those cases are proceeding in court.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). The chief medical examiner, Dr. Aurelio Espinola, attributes the death to a crushed chest and liver laceration, court documents allege other detainees beat him, and the officers' union, the Guam Federation of Teachers, says maintenance problems and delayed medical attention contributed to the death rather than their own negligence.

Reported by: Dr. Aurelio Espinola, chief medical examiner (medical examiner or coroner); court documents; Guam Federation of Teachers (family or their lawyers).
