Makavelle Sampson
Makavelle Sampson, 26, died in September 2023 while held at Cook County Jail. His mother, Nakisha Sampson, said he complained about his headaches almost every time they spoke on the phone, and South Side Weekly reported that he complained of severe headaches in the days before his death. A county pathologist listed the cause of death as an overdose and said a large brain tumor, which had gone undetected during his years at the jail, was a significant contributing factor. When the death was reported to the state, the Cook County Sheriff's Office listed the manner of death as pending.
