Makavelle Sampson, 26, died at Cook County Jail in Illinois in September 2023, where he had been held before trial for several years. His mother, Nakisha Sampson, said he often complained of headaches when they spoke on the phone. Days before his death he reported severe headaches, and a county pathologist listed an overdose as the cause of death, but an autopsy later found a large brain tumor that had not been detected, which the pathologist said was a significant contributing factor.
