Madison Johnson was about 21 years old when he was executed by hanging on June 4, 1841. The North-Carolinian reported that he was taken from the jail under the guard of a volunteer company and brought to the gallows before a large crowd from the town and surrounding countryside. Before he died, he spoke to the crowd for nearly an hour, warning people, especially young people, against gambling, drinking and night carousing. He told them he had not heeded the good advice his parents gave him, and urged the young to avoid the habits he said had led him to that point.
