Mabel Darker
Mrs. John T. Orr, a church organist, was the widow of John T. Orr, a Clarendon merchant, and had moved to Clarendon, Arkansas, from Wisconsin with her husband. In August 1898 she died in her cell at the Monroe County jail, where she was being held, after taking poison; a newspaper account and a coroner's jury both described it as suicide. Accounts differ on the day of her death, and one says she dictated her last words to a reporter before losing consciousness. Her four-year-old daughter, Neva, was left without her mother, and the property she left was placed in trust for the child with the Knights of Pythias lodge her husband had belonged to.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide. A coroner's jury ruled that she took poison herself, and a Little Rock newspaper dispatch reported the same.
Reported by: Little Rock dispatch (newspaper report) (reporters); coroner's jury (medical examiner or coroner).
